Our Story

The Joggling Board

The joggling board is an apt metaphor for the spirit of Joggling Board Press – a way of bringing diverse people together in comity. Joggling boards are long, capable of seating many at one time. By joggling simultaneously, eventually everyone winds up side by side. So it is for the talented people who make up Joggling Board Press.

The decidedly unconventional press has forged its own path with the many books it has undertaken, melding the talents of poets, historians, scholars, journalists, photographers, painters, musicians and designers. At JBP, books are not made in silos. Here, the making of a book is a collaborative experience involving many minds and modes. A white board is an invitation to throw out a new idea; a paint brush is an opportunity to create a mood; a guitar is means to smooth out a bit of poetry. Meetings often take place over meals. Creative sessions might culminate in a woods walk or beach walk. Work happens where and when work works best. The books are as creative as they are thorough.

Making a good book isn’t easy. But it sure can be fun.

Joggling Board Press

Joggling Board Press is a full-service independent publishing company based in Summerville, South Carolina. Here, the making of a book is a collaborative process, melding the minds and talents of writers, editors, artists and designers.

Since its founding in 2003, Joggling Board Press has earned the accolades of heavyweights in the industry and garnered nearly 100 top national and international awards for its titles. We don’t produce many books per year, rather we focus our energies on making books that matter, books that will endure.

As a regional press, we produce non-fiction titles that capture the history, culture and spirit of the South. Occasionally, if the right manuscript comes our way, we publish fiction. Depending on the nature of the project, we may take a traditional publishing approach or we may undertake a partnership, sponsorship or other creative arrangement.

We are a teaching press, offering new, emerging and established writers in-depth editorial reviews, as well as line edit and proofreading services. Editorial mentorships are also available.

When we are able, we host unpaid interns and apprentices looking to gain real-world experience in publishing for school credit or job training.
